Cânhamor’s warehouse for hemp-based construction materials in Portugal

Cânhamor, a manufacturer of hemp-based construction materials, is building a new production facility in Garvão (Portugal). The facility will feature Mecalux’s Pallet Shuttle system and the Easy WMS warehouse management software to streamline operations.

“Our goal is to maximise efficiency in our manufacturing and logistics processes while proactively contributing to the future of our planet,” says Elad Kaspin, Director of Operations at Cânhamor. “We’ll incorporate new technologies in our facility to boost efficiency and reduce our environmental impact. These actions will strengthen our commitment to sustainability and innovation at every stage of the production and supply chain.”

The Portuguese company manufactures ECOblocks, eco-friendly building materials made from hemp. The blocks are used in construction projects that work in harmony with nature rather than exploiting it. Once produced, the hemp blocks are dried at room temperature before being sold. To improve this process, Cânhamor will install Mecalux’s Pallet Shuttle system, which will enhance the management of finished goods during the drying phase in the warehouse.

This automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) will maximise available floor space while maintaining optimal conditions for the hemp blocks. A motorised shuttle will insert and remove loads from their locations autonomously.

Additionally, Cânhamor will implement Mecalux’s Easy WMS software to track its inventory in real time. The system will manage warehouse inflows and outflows, ensuring that the ECOblocks remain on the racks for the necessary drying period.

Operators will control the motor-driven shuttles via the WMS & Pallet Shuttle Integration module. This Easy WMS extension enables workers to control the shuttle’s location and status at any given time using a tablet.

Cânhamor: contributing to the planet’s future

Inspired by the green applications of hemp-based products, Cânhamor produces ECOblocks, a sustainable alternative to traditional building materials. The Portuguese company oversees every step of the hemp block production process, from seed planting to the use of finished products in construction. Dedicated to environmental stewardship, Cânhamor is on the verge of achieving a zero-waste and carbon-negative production process. ECOblocks are made from only natural materials and emit no harmful substances, aligning with the company’s mission to offer greener solutions for the construction industry.
